Conservatism Oversimplified; The Overlooked Hobbies That Produce Strong Men

Character Through Tradition

‍ ‍

“Sports build the fundamental truth that your actions have consequences that stretch far beyond yourself.”

Nobody had to convince me to fish or sign up for soccer. Growing up, these things never felt like choices, they were just second nature. Every season, no exceptions. I never thought to call them hobbies, either. It wasn’t until recently, after reflecting on my first year of college and meeting people who had never experienced any of it, that I understood how lucky I really was.

The benefits of these activities proved to be invaluable. Not monetarily, but as a foundation for the rest of my life. Patience, discipline, community, and strength. The exact thing I see the modern world trying to portray to young men as a luxury. I truly credit my obtaining of these traits to my involvement in what I call “conservative hobbies”. In this piece, I hope to highlight why I believe these experiences are necessary in shaping strong conservatives.

I want to first discuss my most nostalgic and favorite hobby, fishing. If there is one thing about fishing, it's that you can’t fake it. You either wake-up to an alarm before sunrise, learn the spot you wish to fish, and develop the patience to wait - or catch nothing. Nobody is waiting at the dock to hand you a plaque congratulating you on a great effort. I’d like to add, I am all for a great day on the water, regardless of if you catch fish.

However, with fishing, consistently putting in the work will yield results. And that’s the point. The water doesn’t lie. This lesson, unknowingly taught, has stuck with me and taught me about reality more than any lecture could ever.

Sports taught a different lesson, but not a lesser one. For me, accountability to other people was undoubtedly the lesson that has resonated the most with me from my athletic career. If you decide to not give your full effort, your teammates are affected. When your play is lacking, the scoreboard reflects it. There is nowhere to hide and no way to skew your results. Sports build the fundamental truth that your actions have consequences that stretch far beyond yourself.

This is exactly where conservative hobbies intersect with a conservative worldview. Conservatism directly rewards authenticity, tradition, personal responsibility, and direct consequence. These ideas, and many more, were seamlessly taught to me by my conservative hobbies.

To be clear, none of these traits are exclusively conservatism. But they are rarely displayed by the cultural mainstream, which too often treats effort and consequences as optional. And that’s why I believe so much in preserving them.

Not all hobbies are created equal. Passive entertainment has become the default for our generation and, while I think it still has its place, it does not transfer anything that is applicable in reality. You can walk away from years of scrolling social media with nothing to show. However, a long day on the water, in the duck blind ,on the field, or in the weight-room, can teach traits that minimize adversity, earn respect, and sharpen performance when it matters most.

And that is why I think these hobbies are worth protecting. Not just for nostalgia, but because they build character. And honestly, they have always worked. Long before they were even grouped as conservative activities, men who provided and competed were the most prepared for real life adversity.

This isn’t a revelation in the quest for success. It's a pattern across previous generations and a step-by-step guide to prosperity. And I believe it is our job to make sure it never dies. I think back to some of the people I met in college my first year, the ones who might not have been exposed to the hobbies I’ve referenced. It's not the lack of opportunity that separated us, it was the lack of exposure to hobbies that require hard work. That's a gap that I believe needs to be closed.
